Operation: Pacemaker and clean up!
My dad’s come back from the hospital—this morning he had an operation—they put in a pacemaker. He’s not that old, only 58, and has been very fit his whole life—he’s been a record holder in South Africa and got his colours for the country in weightlifting (which he started from the age he could walk)

…but his heart has been playing up for a few years so he needed a pacemaker to get his heart beating properly again. And good for him—the operation was free of charge because the surgeon was the father of a son dad taught. My dad is very highly respected—there’s a reunion in South Africa and the school he taught at for 21 years and one of the students has offered to pay for his flight over and another is lending him a car. See, what goes around come around. I hate it when my dad works his butt off and gets no recognition for it. Then again, there’s a book about St Pauls (where my dad currently teaches) and they’ve given dad full credit for the amount of effort he’s put into the school. And obviously through the free things he’s receiving, there are some people who fully appreicate it.
Well I’m pretty proud of my dad.
Anyway, today I secured my job, and managed to squeeze in some time to go to my old school. It’s the middle of exams but I got to see Rev. B, which was nice. And currently my room is STILL in the state of disaster zone because I kind of… abandoned the whole spring clean thing. I hate cleaning out drawers and cupboards. Some things just can’t get neat. Not to mention I own way too much stuff and even though I’ve thrown out 3 bags of crap, there’s still heaps of shit I want to keep! Augh! So that’s how I’ve given up. But maybe I will attempt it later. For now, adios.

Love Earth
Just a quick entry today. I just came back from the doco film Earth, and while I’m not really into documentaries, this is one I fully encourage people to see. It’s filming is spectacular, the shots of all the animals and the planet are fantastic. It really made me think about how humans are selfish and cruel, and lead lives where we don’t pay attention to serious things like the world ending because of us. I mean, we’re on the top of the food chain and have the power to help the creatures we share the planet with, but thanks to Global Warming and this Brown Cloud that is starting to cover the earth, we’re killing every creature on it—including ourselves. I’ve put a link to the side for Love Earth—please go visit the website. And if you can, watch the Earth movie. It’ll make you want to support the cause. I’m definitely going to start supporting Snow Leopards and Cheetahs once I get a debit card. I love cats, and here’s my chance to do something. So can you.

One third of my course completed!
Ahhh! The year is finally over! I am safe and sound back home. Everything (including the rats) managed to fit into Dad’s car. He forgot to empty the boot (with his golf clubs in) on the way down so thank goodness Nicholas came by last weekend and took some of my stuff because we wouldn’t had no space at all!
So I’m left with a lot of unpacking to do, but that’s ok, it’ll keep me occupied. Dad and Michael have already given me some design jobs for me this holiday, but they’re going to be my Christmas presents to them rather than getting paid. I’m not complaining.
On Friday night about half the class made it to a celebratory dinner at Stella’s—it was soooo good. I shared a large “Silence of the Lambs” pizza with Nathan and Janam, (funny, you’d think that name would mean it’s something gross eh? “it puts the lotion on it’s skin” haha but it was delicious).
Iona and Stef got me a Christmas present too! I don’t have a photo of it unfortunately but it’s some divine chocolate body butter. Unfortunately it’s my favourite substance on the planet but I can’t eat it! Haha, no it was really thoughtful of them. I was pretty cheap with my presents—I couldn’t afford much but I hope they liked my card(s)! I gave a handful out to my classmates. I also did for my tutors, and it’s funny how much they appreciate it. My dad’s a secondary school teacher, and he was telling me how a simple thanks means so much to teachers, and tertiary tutors get it so much less than secondary or even primary school teachers. I managed to bump into Chris and gave him one, and he was so blown away. It’s just a simple Christmas/thank you card! He gave me a kiss on the cheek and was like “You are a lovely girl, Samantha”. I was like, “Chris, it’s no problem.” I think I ended up being more surprised by his surprise.
Talking about teachers, I’m planning on being a secondary teacher after I graduate. Do a diploma for a year then get a teaching job for a while. My dad was pretty excited that I was going to do that. It’s much more safe than being a designer with the economic crisis worldwide (it’s more secure as a job). Plus there are sooo many things I’d enjoy about being a teacher. I mean, I’ll be teaching in design with some other classes (Ie Junior Maths, religious education, drama—whatever I prefer), but whatever I do I think teaching is a job for me. If not, I will have a degree in graphics and I can always go back into that industry!! Plus, if I do a teaching course, the government will back pay all my fees and loans, so I should be debt free! I have to research into that a bit more to be sure!
Nicole and Johnno were in different cars on the way back home but we must have caught up with them because we crossed paths with Nicole at the turnoff to Auckland in Hamilton (we were going straight, she was turning onto the main highway to Auckland). What a co-in-kee-dink! It was just when I was texting her about how my rats were. It was hot in the car.. I think they were suffering, poor things! My dad wants me to give them away and buy me guinea pigs instead. I LOVE guinea pigs, but I can’t just sell my rats! Poor things! And they’re already suffering because of my cat and god terrifying them (well, they just looked at the cat and froze up—my cat took no notice of them!). Anyway, me and dad had a good chat about all sorts of things on the 4 and a half hour trip home. Politics (Dad reckons Obama and John Key will be great) to careers (teaching) to how well I’ve stepped up to university (considering how lazy I was in High School—which was true, but still haha). The randomest things. Me and Nicole/Aaron (whoever I went up with) have had some really good convos before. It’s funny how much you can talk about in 4 hours and still not run out of things to talk about.
So my year has been pretty good. Oh yeah! And last night, because Nic and Johnno had gone to Palmy, I was by myself so I had a very good “me” time—pampering myself while watching movies (Fight Club and I know who Killed me .. not TOO bad, but not the best movie ever). Hanging out with me was fun! Haha. Nah, everyone should have some time to themselves from time to time. The only person who really understands and appreciates you is yourself, seeing as we live in a world where everyone is naturally “me me me”, so yeah. And there were no interruptions all night and just pure peace and quiet (sides from the movie). Whoever reads this should do it sometime. Lock your door, turn off your phone, close the curtains, put on a DVD, cuddle up in bed (or on the couch) with blankets and food supplies and relax. Or, if you get fidgety like me, do your nails or straighten your hair. I think I could do that every night and never get sick of it.
Anyway, I hope everyone has a good holiday! I can’t believe I’ve finished one year and in three months am starting second year!!! Now to sort out a job…

Change has come to New Zealand!!!
Can you believe it? I thought the party I supported wasn’t going to win… but we won by a landslide! That means, Helen Clark’s reign as Prime Minister of New Zealand for the last 9 years has come to an end! Hurruh!
Thanks to Obama and his message of change, the blue party over here has won aswell! Except that it’s the right wing party. And that they’re not really right wing compared to America so that’s ok.
Anyway, welcome President Barack Obama and welcome Prime Minister John Key!
Woo hoo! What a political week for me it has been! It’s fantastic!!!

OBAMA WINS! The stress is over, the hope goes on!
I am SO SO SO happy! Most people know how much of a fan of Barack Obama I am, and will be glad to know this entry won’t be about how stupid America is (that is if McCain had won) but now it’s about how proud of America I now am, and I am glad they chose the right man. The man who deserves it, and realised America for how it was—from a non-Patriotic, non-American point of view. And now he can fix America up!
I am soooo happy!
I just watched his victory speech. It was interupted from other bullitens from all over the US and in Wellington (US New Zealanders) so I wished I was there. Really dramatic, really powerful. It’s a great moment of history I have just witnessed!
Maybe there’ll be change in our government this Saturday. You won’t believe how many stupid people have come up to me and told me not to vote for National because of this or that. The lies that our current government spread! It’s another burden to bear!
Anyway, I really respect McCain—his “acceptance of loss” speech was really nice. Good on him…
Michael (my brother) has just text me—he’s crying. The victory speech by Obama moved him THAT much! Haha. Cute.
Anyway, I will update later on more Obama related news. For now, the news is on again.

The time is coming!
Less than 24 hours until we find out who will become the new President…
Obama (who the whole world is rallying for)
or McCain the idiot who won’t clean up Bush’s mess but make it worse!
Hmm… I was going to say “jokes” but I don’t know…
But yeah, it’s getting exciting! It was top of our country’s news and everything.
Aw, poor Obama though, my prayers go out to him and his family for the death of his grandmother. On the eve of the election! Now Obama REALLY deserves it. But I’m still scared that the majority of America are stupid and will vote for the wrong man!
*Eeek*
I’ll update when the time comes. For now, I have a pile of work I’m procrastinating over :[
Oh, and I’m reading Daddy-Long-Legs the book. SHEESH. It’s my current obsession. I wish I lived in 1912 and had a rich, handsome admirer send me gifts and love!! There’s no romance in this day and age! Nor men like Mr Pendleton!

My movie review…career
You’d think that movies these days would be a gazillion times better than olden day ones, especially silent films?
Well, I suppose that’s true in most cases except one.
The last two movies I watched were
Daddy-Long-Legs (1919)—based (albeit loosely) on the Jean Webster novel, and
Marie and Bruce (2004)—starring Julianne Moore and Matthew Broderick.
Starting with DLL. I loved the book, but the movie was a bit badly interpreted. I mean, no surprise, films of that day and age are pretty bad. But although it started off comedy (first HALF was based on the first CHAPTER of the book, wth?) and ended in the book’s actual genre of romance, it was pretty cute. I enjoyed it. It’ll probably be partly because I enjoyed the book and I thought Marlon Hamilton was gorgeous for a guy of that time (I know, I have a taste in older men—that’s only my romantic side coming out. Most old men are pretty foul and I don’t encourage people to date older men). But all in all, I liked it! Silent film or not!
But then we move onto Marie and Bruce. With Julianne Moore in it, I thought It’d be pretty good, even Matthew Broderick (although b-grade) is ok. But I was utterly appalled by it. It didn’t make sense, it became annoying, it seemed an age even though it was 84 minutes. It seemed as though it was meant to be an art house, thought-provoking type of film—obviously not meant to be a Blockbuster—but I usually enjoy those types of films. not this one. I can’t even be bothered explaining what made it so bad because it’s already wasted a part of my life. All I can say is that at the end, when I expected some explaination.. the credits rolled and I started fuming. 1 star out of 10. That one goes because it had a twist and the acting wasn’t too foul (neither was the art direction, but we expect good standards for all films these days). I think what made it so bad was the plot, the characters, and the writing. I do not recommend it at all unless you’re nor curious and therefore I sentence you to 84 minutes to be wasted.
If anyone has seen it, can anyone try and tell me why the hell Bruce was so fucked up and why Julianne Moore never left him (and why she got high out of the blue?)
When you passionately hate something you talk about it more than when you passionately love something sometimes.
I hope they make a film about the Daddy-Long-Legs film someday. If they stick to the book it’ll be pretty good. Only bad factor is that it’ll be too “old school romanticism” to make any money. Titanic is the only story from the same decade (same YEAR) to do well but they had to make it really modern day romance with the sex and passion and crap. I mean, was it like that in those days? I thought they were all prudes.
Signing off.

It’s time for an apology of my own
I guess I have to say sorry too that my apology came out wrong and you took it the wrong way. My intention was never to offend you further.
I’m sorry for what I said.
I really am.

Silent films to trade me addictions… heh
Moving on, it’s only 6 days until Obama is officially voted as president! I’m thinking his chances are high (that’s why I’m assuming already) but there is a chance that it’ll be rigged so McOld wins. It’s highly unlikely now, but still.
In New Zealand politics, it looks like Helen has become a little desperate with all the smears. Unfortunately it doesn’t looks so good for John Key because Helen is good at making the public think they’re the better option. I like John Key’s adverts for National because they’re just about National. They’re not aiming guns at Labour even though they could.
Last night I watched Daddy-Long-Legs, the 1919 silent film with Mary Pickford on Youtube. I must say, the book is way better. I mean, the first half of the movie was comedy, based on like, the first chapter of the book. The rest of the movie is based on the other 95% of the book, but tweaked and refined to something short. It was cute though, but I prefer the book.
I must say, that Marlon Hamilton is pretty hot for an old, silent film actor. Hah!
Oh, and I’ve been bidding on heaps of cool clothes and accessories on Trademe.co.nz. Unfortunately most of them so far I have been outbid on or it went way out of my price range. I have a few more auctions due to close but I won a crown ring:

Ain’t it cool? It ended up being a bit expensive with the postage and packaging, but it was cheaper in total than the “buy now” price! I’m bidding for a crown necklace too, but that closes next week. All in theme for this website.
School is busy and boring, but I’m coping. Two more weeks till freedom!
PS: Michael, you’re the best!
