Assignment updates

So besides the million things I do each day that are not design related (like, getting excited for Obama), what have I been doing? School work, that’s what! And I have a lot of it. Not all of it fun either.

However, it’s time I shared some work with you. For my CGD3 class, we were given the job to design answers to random Proust Questionnaire questions. Here are two of the total six:

Samantha Oehley Proust Samantha Oehley Proust

The aim of this project was to answer personal (and random) questions about yourself in an original and versatile way. I decided to emulate fifties/sixties style illustrations and design it as though it was in a book. So, my answers were extracts with supporting illustration. I was honest in answering the questions, but rather exaggerating and taking the mickey out of me to make myself seem more interesting.

See the rest of the designs here.

I’ve also added to the illustration page my threadless tshirt design, a humourous shirt that probably only typographers and designers would understand:

Remember to vote for it!

Love,

Samantha

Typo - Threadless T-shirts, Nude No More

This design was part of my Illustration class. It was a fun project! Crossing fingers for print acceptance, but I’d be really really lucky if that happened :/

We’ll wait and see!!

Shop Spotlight!

Hello lovelies,
I just passed some etsy shops that I just knew I had to share with you all. I love etsy, I just can’t always afford it—the postage and packaging from the US is ridiculous!

Anyway, I came across: www.behidadolic.com’s shop on Etsy. They have these totally gorgeous 20’s inspired hats. I dream of owning one!

Then I found Plum Pretty Sugar loungerie, and was mesmerised by the patterns and prettiness.

And lastly but not leastly, Oxford Heaven, which is heaven in the form of an etsy shop. For those who are crazy about shoes, you’ll love these even more than I do!!

These cutie shops are making me consumerist! Or at least wannabe consumerist!!

And so I shall leave you with a quote….

What is a friend? A single soul dwelling in two bodies. ~ Aristotle

Lovlies for your eyes! Valentine’s day plans…

Another round of pretty things for your pretty eyes :)

The second image reminds me of perfect card ideas for Valentine’s day coming up!

sources unknown [if you know, let me know!]

Honestly, lovely colours, vibrant energy, gorgeous details… all these things make me feel so happy!

PLUS! I’m totally loving:

Not only is the Chemise gorgeous, but I love the gift box as well. This overall design, the pink and the delicate details are so me! I need a boyfriend to buy me this… :/

Speaking of which, Valentine’s Day is coming up (oh no, have you forgotten?). And while previous years I haven’t had a sweetheart to celebrate with, this year I do!

But don’t get too excited. One of my best friends and I, my gorgeous friend Shahana, have decided to be each other’s valentines. Because why not? There’s no boys spoiling us, and if we had boys, we wouldn’t be the ones spoiling them (what straight guy in New Zealand is sentimental enough to let *us* flood them with pretty girly things? Someone find me one!). So this year we get to be as sentimental, sappy and excited as we like without worrying if our significant other is going to find it too cheesy or too girly.

So this is what I plan to do for Shahana:

1.
Have a picnic at the Hamilton gardens, granted that it’s a warm summer’s day still.

2.
Give her chocolate and/or flowers (the standard)

3.
Give her a special gift—a mix tape of “our” and my favourite songs, CD case decorated with pretty embellishments

4.
Write her an ever-so-romantic love letter (or at least take a famous one from some dark-ages Duke and re-write it :P)

The best thing about Shahana and my friendship is that we sometimes act like lovers, but never in a physical way. It’s like getting the benefits of love without having to be lesbian. Girls, your best friends are more important than fashion, diamonds or your entire shoe collection. Treat them well <3.

If you don’t have anyone to share Valentine’s day with this year, why don’t you do something similar with your bestie? It’s innocent, fun and best of all—you don’t miss out on the hype of V-day :)

A look inside my wardrobe and shopping bag…

I just saw Invictus with my brother. Oh my word, as a South African this is the greatest movie ever. You won’t believe how much this movie, and the actual ‘95 World Cup victory meant to our country. I loved it! (And don’t listen to the New Zealand fans who reckon the game was rigged and the players poisoned deliberately—they’re just sore losers). Great movie though, much better than that over-hyped-up Avatar! I’m impressed that Hollywood took it on. Maybe America will pick up on this real man’s sport now!

Anyway, to design and fashion!

Here are some items of clothing I’m particularly liking at the moment [click thumbnail for larger image]:

Sweater from Aztec Rose. I got it for NZ$20 (original price NZ$105!). It looks light, but is very warm. Too bad it’s summer and I can only wear it on rare occasions.

This was a fairly cheap item I bought at some random store at a random mall. But I love it!

These pants were worth NZ$129, I got them for NZ$49. Yus! They’re gorgeous little business pants. And like heaven to wear—they have silk lining!

This shirt was a design of my own. I bought a cheap coral-coloured t-shirt, chose some lyrics (”Love me do” by the Beatles) and because I don’t have a sewing machine, I went to an embroidery store and had them attach the letters. Took no time at all and hardly cost me a thing!

I ordered some postcards from Courtney Brims’ website. Really cheap! Here they are:

And I FINALLY got my Smashbox Lipstick in Nude (Charming)!!. So exciting! Getting it online cost me half the price of what I could have paid retail!

And thus ends my shopping spree!

PS: I really, really want this house! Oh, it just soooo “me!”

Pretties and Politics

Here’s a few pretty things I’d like to share with you. The interior designs are from Design*Sponge, the Dresses are from Something Old, Something New.

I’ve never seen mirrors used so artistically in a home interior!

I want these dresses so badly! I love coral, but make the second dress white and it’s my ideal wedding dress! I’ll always love the floaty-Jane Austen look! Love it!

Lately, the Pentagram “What type are you?” quiz has been popping up around design blogs. I got the typeface Plastica:

Plastica extrudes feeling and ambition. If you are someone less assertive but want to be seen or heard more than you are, this typeface is for you.

If you love typography, take it. It’s quite fun. Oh, and the password is character.
NOTE: Behind the questioner, is a hand figure.. notice it’s finger? Ha.

And for American political followers: Keep supporting Obama! Don’t let the Republicans, Media or large-corporation insurance and drug companies brainwash you into thinking Obama is doing the wrong thing or can’t do it. The health care reform bill is essential. Here in New Zealand we have free health care and I can’t imagine what life would be like without it. Show loyalty to your President!

Summertime, and the livin’ is easy…

Two home interiors that totally inspired me this week, courtesy of Design*Sponge:

And from the Design is Mine blog, they has a selection of photos displaying various interiors.. the designs were quite quaint, vintage and delicate. I love it! Click the image to see more:

I’ve been really inspired by illustrators as of late, and one I particularly liked was Courtney Brims, a Brisbane-based self-taught illustrator. Her work is so beautiful, I feel that they are inspired by Audrey Kawasaki’s work, which is innocent yet seductive. Courtney Brims work is very sweet, but it has these dark themes mixed in with it. And she uses pencil! There aren’t many artists these days who don’t use digital or even traditional paint. Anyway, I ordered a set of postcard prints from her website. Have a look at her work.. Here’s a few for a start:

Lastly, but more importantly, who else is a huge fan of Frankie Magazine? If I could afford it, I’d subscribe to it. I love that magazine. Someone buy me a sub! Haha :P

My brothers (well, one of) and Dad are back from their African Safari trip. Unfortunately they landed only 2 hours after Prince William arrived in NZ… I’ll post some photos of their trip sometime. Lucky dogs, I haven’t been back to South Africa since we emigrated!

Queen Sammy [dot] com refurbished for a new decade

I was meant to unveil the new look and design for New Years, but now will do. I’ve had this website (and many before it) since 2007, and this site has gone under many changes reflecting who I am. Now I’d like to dedicate this more to design-related things, and using this as a means of showcasing my work. Despite it all being non-work related at the moment!

Have a browse, or continue reading this blog. I’m interested to know who visits, so please leave a comment (link at the end of this blog entry) telling me what you think (and who you are)! :)

Anyway, I hope everyone had a good Christmas. Mine was simple, nothing flash, but very nice all the same. I missed Michael, Stephen and my Dad though. On Christmas day they were driving through Zambia. Next year Michael, Nicholas and I will be in New York weather, so I can’t decide which would be better: extreme heat or extreme freeze? My friend Fran says that Xmas in NY is amazing, so I’m looking forward to it!

Now I want to specifically advertise one of my favourite websites of all time. I’ve been a regular surfer or Design*Sponge, and it’s a source of a lot of inspiration for me. I would love to run a blog site like that one day. One particular thing I love about D*S is their showcase of people’s homes. I love seeing other people’s workspaces and living rooms etc, I’d love to have such a beautiful home like the ones I see on D*S. Here are some I particularly like [click image to see more]:

Love it!

My Personal Goal.

You know how you set a goal and try to achieve it? How about a really far-fetched one, or one you think you can never achieve?

Well I’m setting one.

I plan to meet John Key, with a little help from my online friends. I’ve set up a page on facebook (please join!) and a twitter page and I need all your support—hopefully if I generate enough attention, John Key might notice and want to meet me in support!

..When he’s free from all his impressive business overseas and cracking jokes on Letterman (how COOL is he? I mean, I always liked him, but after Letterman, I think it may just be love).

I created a TWITTER page for this project. a TWITTER PAGE! That is seriously a big deal, seeing as I promised never to join, so you can tell I really want to make this happen. Laugh now, but I plan to be laughing last!

And really, you can’t call it sad—its better than wanting to meet a Jonas Brother or something!
